Larry Langford, mayor of Birmingham Alabama on WRCB TV
The Mayor of Birmingham, Alabama wants to provide every first through eighth grade student with a laptop computer. The latest plans are for 15 thousand XO laptops to be delivered as soon as possible, possibly as soon as when the students are back in school after the Christmas holliday in January.

So, I’m using linux, and OLPC software, so I can’t watch your video because it uses a Microsoft format!? How about providing something more in the spirit of the OLPC, something more open, like perhaps MP4 or something as well? That way EVERYONE can view your video?

I’m not making those videos, I am just embedding or linking to the available olpc related videos on the Internet.
When I do make videos I put them in this channel: http://olpc.tv/channel/hd/ and my videos usually are available in the DivX format.
Though I guess Mplayer or Totem should be able to play embedded wmv videos?

I’d suggest contacting the organization/author/whatever and make them aware of this oversight, and perhaps converting to say, flash, which is what has been popping up and opening without any problem for me. But WMV? Gimme a break. Or if you like, send me contact info and I’ll inform the Mayor, etc. how his message is being lost to millions who don’t use WMV formats?

It is not the mayor, it is wrcbtv.com and many other websites that use WMV.
Are you sure that WMV doesn’t work on Linux?

I wasn’t being specific
Regardless of whether it is the mayor, a news agency, or anyone else, they should be aware of the problems of using proprietary formats, etc., and if they really want to continue to get their message out, they should choose freely available formats/specs, etc. somewhat akin to the odf debate, etc.
(And I won’t be watching any .wmv files. Life is short. :-)) I prefer free, open formats, thanks.
