Articles on the topic of Intel using predatory tactics to try and stop OLPC from starting mass production:

The Inquirer: Negroponte says Intel should be “ashamed of itself”

Fortune (David Kirkpatrick): Does Intel fear $100 laptops?Intel’s longtime animosity to the project has taken on
new intensity, and that has consequences. Negroponte asserts that in the last couple of weeks, as the
final deadline of May 30 approaches for countries to make firm commitments for XOs (ideally in lots of a
million at a time), Intel has been methodically going to the expected launch countries and offering
unusually attractive terms for its own much-less-sexy Classmate PC.

  1. It is unfortunate that Intel would take this angle towards an organization dedicated to the education of the world. A perfect example of corporate evil.

  2. Hey guys

Just sat through the video and find it very interesting. I had heard of the project but hadn’t realised the pitfalls they have apart from the obvious price issue. Now it seems the main threat is is competition to the project.

    I think I may have a solution though…

Instead of the these other companies trying to push their products at the governments where OLPC is trying to sell the concept more than the actual product. I understnad that there obviously is some drive to make profit or at least cut even but why not consider everyone working toward a common goal.

OLPC has a already working product and the concept is excellent. Instead of trying to compete against OLPC why not bid on a next model placement system. INtel have their “Classmate” which is good I’m sure, but it should be looked at as a replacement for when the OLPC one should be replaced (one year). So why not help push the idea. The following cycle the new product can be pushed and so on.

Once the initial project is adopted and the need is actually realised by the 3rd world governments, it will be emensely easier to push newer better products…

This is a project I may volenteer for however this underhand BS is off utting at the expense of our next generations.

  9. Well, if intel have less price than 100 dollars and its better, well…after all negroponte is not interested in the money so…

    Comment by Anthony K — May 21, 2007 @ 9:48 pm

  10. Why is intel evil exactly? Because they’re a corporation trying to make profits? So if Intel and these other corporations are trying to provide $100 laptops as well, then doesn’t that mean more $100 laptops for everyone? The only difference between what Negroponte and Intel are doing is that Negroponte is doing it through a non-profit corporation and Intel is doing it as a for-profit corporation. The end result is the same: poor kids getting cheap laptops. At the end of the day, Negroponte still has to pay his people just like Intel has to pay theirs.

Remember how competition drives prices down for consumers? Perhaps it will drive the cost down below $100 per laptop. Then everybody wins, including Intel’s shareholders. Negroponte is just an ego maniac who feels Intel is stealing his thunder. He’s more concerned about his benevolent image than he is about kids getting laptops.

  11. Mark Nutter, Intel is not interested in the One Laptop Per Child philosophy. All that Intel is after is to make sure OLPC doesn’t start mass production.

Intel is not offering a million computers at 180$ each, they are offering 10 thousand units at that price. Saying stuff like “Hey just take ours, you don’t need to invest in a million units to have a lower price per unit”. It’s just fine if Intel wants to sell or give away 10 thousand Classmates at a time, but they should NOT do that only to try and drive OLPC out of business, by targetting only the same governments that are in talks with OLPC.

And just as with India and Pakistan, who knows what kinds of pressures have been put on those countries exactly by Intel to pressure those governments out of buying into the launch of OLPC. That Intel promised billion dollar investments in Indian ICT and probably also Pakistani might have been part of that pressure.

  13. OF COURSE Intel is trying to stop OLPC. It will ruin their business model, drive down their prices, and put LOTS of money and Fame into AMD.

In fact, I think they hate the IDEA of AMD getting anything most of all.

  21. Its something that big corporations are afraid of. The OLPC is a product created solely by small independant companies, from the hardware down to the OS. Intel is in Microsoft’s pocket- I dont think they like the idea of linux becoming a siginifigant presence in the computing world. What is failed to be mentioned here is that during development, Apple offered OS X for free as an operating system, but was turned down in favor of Linux and the XO interface. These “standard interfaces” may be intuitive to people who have experience using a computer, but to a child who has never seen a computer, the centralized and peer based computing and networking, all organized in a visually logical way, may seem much more natural and attractive to use.
