Proyecto Ceibal

Filed under: Children, Spanish, Subtitled in English, Uruguay — Charbax @ 5:32 pm

English subtitles made by Alec McLure and Philip:

Noticiero uruguayo Subrayado del 18/05/07, nota sobre evolución del proyecto Ceibal.

Subrayado Show – 18th May 2007
[“Subrayado” translates as “Underlined”, or “Underscored”]

Anchorwoman: It’s been a week since the first student computer delivery by
the “Plan for Universal Computing.”
‘Subrayado’ went to the school in La Florida chosen to begin this project.

Reporter: What I noticed this morning when visiting the Villa del Cardal
school was that these computers are teaching children something
foundational. They are teaching children to think, to reason, to search for
knowledge.

[Video of excited crowd of children]

A week ago these children were thrilled. Seven days later they are surprised
by the possibilities they’ve been given access to.

[Girl walks up – reporter puts microphone in front of her]

Reporter: This is Anita, she’s in 4th grade and is nine years old.

You’ve visited the Internet, what have you researched, what topic?

Anita: The earth, solar system, all that kind of thing. Also the Battle of
Las Piedras.

Other girl: Also the floods.

Anita: Yes.

[Scene switches to classroom]

Teacher: [guiding children on computer use] So we press the right button…
Where are we going now? Let’s go..

Reporter: Are they reading more?

Teacher: That’s what a mother was telling me today. They’re reading more.
It’s helped them a lot with their copying [homework], also correcting
spelling and grammar.

They’re more interested in reading.

Reporter: Not to mention that no computer was missing.

Teacher: Not one was missing – and no kids have been absent since we’ve had
the computers.

[Piano music]

Children singing: We know it well, we know it…

  1. If someone who understands Spanish would like to post roughly translated transcripts that would be great..
